I said to the man
Who stood at the gate of the year,
“Give me a light that I may tread safely
into the unknown.”
And he replied,
“Go out into the darkness
and put your hand into the hand of God
That shall be to you
Better than the light
And safer than a known way!”
So I went forth
And finding the hand of God
Trod gladly into the light.

King George VI quoted this in his Christmas message 1939 just after the start of the 2nd World war. No I'm not old enough to remember that! But the Queen included a recording of her father's speech in one of her Christmas messages (1978-I looked it up)and the lines stuck with me.
It's long been a favourite of mine as well. I think I found it on a card in a Bible bookshop one time.
I thought of it last week as something I felt the Lord was reminding me in looking at the year ahead:
"I will be safer than a known way"
